Foresight Friday: Unplug and Reboot Your Spirit

Divination Method: The Illustrated Herbiary

Card Drawn: Oats

Key Word: Just Be

My Foresight Friday Interpretation:

It’s Friday again, friends! Did y’all get up the courage to punch the Devil of Self-Doubt in the face last week?? I got in a couple good whacks, and I am ready to whack him again should he be dumb enough to come around again.

ON TO THIS WEEK! Spring is most decidedly in the air, and that made me pick up Maia Toll’s The Illustrated Herbiary deck for this week’s reading. Plants are working their way back to the forefront of my consciousness, now that the temperature looks like it’s going to stay above freezing for a while.

Let’s see what the cards have to say...

The card that presented itself to us this week is Oats.

The deep, yet subdued, color scheme of this card draws us in to an image of stacked stones. These carefully balanced stones are sitting at the water’s edge, as a curtain of Oats sways in the breeze behind them. Grains can be seen causing small ripples as they drop to the otherwise smooth surface of the water, that also holds the reflection of the stones that sit on the shore.

The Oats card is a call for us to unplug from our troubles and other distractions. This is a time to for us to spend some quality time simply existing.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Oats are said to circulate qi (energy) as well as calm the spirit. Take that into consideration if you choose to take advantage of the power of Oats in a ritual way this week.

This ritual could be as simple as taking a bath fortified with powdered oats (adding other calming herbs will only add to the level of calm). If soaking in a hot tub isn’t your thing, perhaps making a nice treat with Oats will do the trick. Starting the day with a nice warm bowl of rolled oats (or instant, no judgement) easily soothes the soul. Better yet, a nice fresh homemade oatmeal cookie (of any variety) ...still warm from the oven, has always had a tremendously calming effects in my experience.

Get imaginative...but find a way to DO something involving Oats.

Oats’ Reflection revolves around Being Silent. It’s time to stop asking questions, and actively seeking answers...at least for now.

For this week, it’s ok to not know. Our existence does not depend on what we know and what we don’t. We simply ARE.

Meditation is one way to achieve this, but something as simple as taking a walk, or spending a few moments with our faces bathed in the ever-growing amounts of sunlight in the coming week will do the trick.

Whatever we do this week, make sure it involves a few moments of unplugging from pretty much everything. It’s the perfect way to reboot our weary spirits.

I'll leave you with this quote from author Anne Lamott:

“Almost anything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes...including you.” Anne Lamott
