Pixie Product Review - Earth Day Edition: Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Eco-Sheets

Earth Day is this week, and that seemed like the perfect time to let you all know about a product that I decided to try in an effort to reduce our household plastic consumption.

Most plastics these days are recyclable, yet large percentages of plastics still end up in our oceans and landfills. Beyond that, the process of creating plastic itself is detrimental to the environment. Rather than type all of the things that you may already be familiar with, I’ll simply link to the “The Problems with Plastics” page over on the Ecology Center’s website for you to peruse as you see fit.

I am not trying to eliminate plastics entirely, as I don’t see this as realistic for someone living on limited means (which is really about 99% of us) but I will keep eliminating it wherever I find viable alternatives. For instance, I have just chosen a new rotating, dual compartment compost bin for us to use. The bin itself is made of plastic, but it’s the only way such an item can be both affordable and long-lasting, while keeping the material being composted neatly contained in our tiny yard (at least that I am aware of).

I do believe we should eliminate plastic wherever we feel we can, however, and these laundry detergent sheets seemed like a good place to start. Now, I just had to find out if they work.

Why Did I Choose Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Eco-Sheets?

As I stated above, I’ve been looking for ways to reduce/eliminate some plastic consumption around our house. Several weeks ago a promoted post from Earth Breeze came across my Instagram feed and I decided to check out their website.

I really liked the idea of eliminating those giant laundry detergent bottles from my home. The plant based cleaning agents are biodegradable, sheets dissolve completely and quickly, and the packaging is made of 100% biodegradable cardboard and ink. This was sounding pretty good.

I was a little concerned about the cost, but the subscription option actually brings the price to a comparable level to what we’ve been spending on detergent.

What made me take the plunge was the fact that, they’re a carbon neutral business AND Earth Breeze donates 10 loads worth of sheets to charity with every purchase. You even get to choose where they send the sheets! Charity choices include: Homeless Shelters, Women’s Shelters, Animal Shelters, Veterans’ Homes, and Developing Countries. So, this Pixie was sold. I made my purchase and chose to have a donation sent to Women’s Shelters.

Earth Breeze Fragrance Free Laundry Detergent Eco-Sheets

Which Variety of Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Eco-Sheets Did I Try?

Earth Breeze says that their products are created with sensitive skin in mind, but in addition to their Fresh Scent sheets they offer Fragrance Free for those who may be sensitive to smells as well. I opted for the Fragrance Free because I do tend to get overwhelmed with some detergent scents.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they mean what they say! I stuck my nose right in the package upon opening it, and was not smacked in the face by perfumes.

I threw my clothes in the washer, tossed in the sheet and watched it start to dissolve immediately.

Once it was time to switch them to the dryer, I made sure to do a “sniff check” and the clothes were indeed super clean. These little things don’t disappoint! I love that it’s just grab a sheet and toss it in too. No measuring needed, and if you’re doing a small load, just rip a sheet in half. It’s also worth noting that these little sheets eliminate the possibility of messes due to someone having a case of the clumsies. (Why are you looking at me?)

I tend to wait wayyyyy longer than I should to do my laundry, and do rather large loads as a result. One sheet cleaned this entire pile of geeky t-shirts, a sweater, a couple pairs of pants, and an armload of socks & unmentionables.

Final Thoughts on Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Eco-Sheets:

I have to say that I was impressed with Earth Breeze! The sheets take up very little space, they dissolve quickly & completely (even in cold water), and (most importantly) my clothes are clean! I also like their subscription option, as it means I don’t have to remember to get more…it will just magically appear in my mail box at the predetermined time.

Once the package is empty, I’ll be able to tear up the envelope and toss it in our soon-to-be-acquired compost bin! I have to say, 20 years ago, I never would have been excited by such a thing. Here’s hoping that current and future 20-somethings are far more eco-conscious than I was.
